Many Children Need More Literacy Help Than They Get

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

I have been engaged in providing corrective reading to adults and children for decades now. Due to the shame and self-esteem issues that are sometimes evident, I have stayed away from making public comments, posting pictures or videos. However, I made a post in January about the reality of a child that I was assisting to bring awareness to the literacy challenges that some students are facing, yet they are moving through the system.

In a recent literacy class, my reader granted me permission to record the process of completing a task. Do see the video attached.

I realised that it took a little over five minutes to assist the learner phonetically to spell one word. This reader is preparing for the Primary Exit Profile (PEP). My heart aches. If it took me this much time, how can this learner or any other receive the help needed to overcome the hurdles present in a regular size classroom in Jamaica? How will that classroom teacher help them. I am sure that there are more like this student in that class or classes across the nation.

Parents, you can help your children who are functioning below the expected developmental level in literacy. You can access resources, many are free right here at www.withauntienats.com as well as from my YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@nehemiahreadingprogramme. You could also join the Facebook group where you can receive further help. https://www.facebook.com/groups/145370546227234/

Join the movement. Let us rebuild the walls of literacy together.
